Bac Kan is located at the hilly and mountainous area, surrounded with rivers and is one of the special provinces in the Northeastern part of Vietnam. Bac Kan is still among one of the least populated provinces in the northern midlands and mountain areas of Vietnam. The main ethnic groups in the province in decreasing number, are ethnic Kinh, Tay, Nung and Dao.

Bac Kan is a mountainous terrain with rich natural resources of minerals and forests, especially primitive forests with diversity of flora and fauna. The slowly development of the province seems to be helpful to maintain and preserve the particular of the minority culture and the beauty of nature.  It has numerous mountains, rivers and lakes which are very scenic. Ba Be National Park is a highlight of Bac Kan and it attracts a lot of tourists every year. The Park was established in 1992 with its total area of 100.48 km2. Center of the park is the Ba Be lake which relates to a famous legend of Vietnamese people. The name of Ba Be means “three lakes” which are Pe Leng, Pe Lu, and Pe Lam. This largest natural fresh water lake stretches about 8 kilometers in the north-south direction. Unlike many lakes in Karst limestone areas, Ba Be Lake never falls in drought with its maximum depth of 35 meters.

The vegetation in Ba Be National Park mainly consists of limestone and evergreen forest. The park is also home of many kinds of wild animals like birds, fish, reptiles, amphibian species, the King Cobra… and worthy for its diversity in butterflies. All of these make Ba Be National park become the center of ecotourism in the north of Vietnam.

Bac Kan is also famous for some war relics as Na Tu, ATK… The ATK  is located in Bang Lung Town let, Cho Don District. The ATK is the abbreviation for “An Toan Khu”, meaning “safe zone”. It consists of a complex of underground tunnels and rooms emboldened by a missile defense system in Cho Don. This unique and invincible complex was one of the most important venues of the Vietnam Army from 1946 to 1954, where President Ho Chi Minh and many other leaders gathered, discussed and made vital decision involving the destiny of the nation.

Ba Be National Park

Ba Be is a rural district of Bac Kan province in the northeast region of Vietnam. Ba Be has diversity flora and beautiful natural scene. The famous destination is Ba Be National Park which is a popular Vietnam’s natural complex mainly consisting of Ba Be Lake, the supposed largest natural fresh water lake in Vietnam. The 150m altitude makes it the Vietnam’s highest lake above sea level.

Located in the Nam Mau Commune, Ba Be District, Bac Kan Province and about 220 km from Ha Noi, Ba Be Lake is one of the top 100 freshwater lakes in the world and the largest one in North of Vietnam. The name Ba Be comes from its water sources those are the three branches, Pe Lam, Pe Leng and Pe Lu.

Ba Be Lake is 650 hectares width, 145 meters altitude, 8 kilometers length, 20-25 meters average depth and be surrounded by the limestone mountains with caves and underground streams. Due to favorable position, at the centre of the Ba Be National Park, Ba Be Lake is the home to a giant fauna with 81 kinds of animal, 27 kinds of reptile, 322 kinds of bird, 106 kinds of fish and 553 kinds of insect and spider.

In 1995, Ba Be Lake was recognized as one of the 20 special freshwater lakes in the world. In 2004, ASEAN also recognized it as the Heritage Garden. And now Ba Be Lake, with Ba Be National Park, is one of the most precious gems of Vietnamese tourism and an ideal ecological site for any visitors, especially spring and summer.

Dau Dang waterfall

Dau Dang waterfall is an attraction located near Ba Be Lake which fall into the heart of a rocky gorge between two lakes.

They consist of a series of rapid spread over 1 km. Two hundred meters below the rapids is small hamlet of 5 houses of Tay minority, Hua Tang.

Legend has it that the giant dug the cave Puong on Nang river to stones and this place would have become a waterfall.

Puong cave

The cave Puong is one of the most attractive place of the Northeast region. Crossing through the mountains is the Nang river, taking a sampan not only allow you have a wonderful cruise in this scenic landscape but also have a chance to discover the mysterious grottos.

Puong cave is 30 m high and 300m long, it was carved over millions of years of erosion. Its walls are covered with dried moss deposited by floods.

Bat is the main residence there, The local people exploit the guano of bat.

Hua Ma cave

Hua Ma means “Horse’s head” is a cave on a mountain, 300m above the sea level. Thí cave is 500m long and 50 m high, is home to beautiful stalactites in various shapes and size such as: flowers, pen tower.

All these stalactites were formed over millions of years. That’s why Hua Ma cave is not only a beautiful spot but also an interesting sire for those who research geology.

This cave is located in the commune of Quang Khe, in Ba Be district, 6 km to the southwest of Ba Be lake.
