Dien Bien province contains 1 city and 8 districts including Dien Bien Phu, Muong Lay, Dien Bien Dong, Muong Ang, Muong Cha, Muong Nhe, Tua Chua, Tuan Giao, and Nam Po. Muong Thanh Valley is largest one of this region. The topography includes forests, high mountains, narrow valleys, small plains, and springs.
Dien Bien History
The province’s name menas “stable frontier”. In the 9th and 10th centuries, the Lu of Muong Thanh people were the most developed in the area and controlled Sin Ho, Muong Lay, and Tuan Giao. In the 11th and 12th centuries, Thai people from Muong Om and Muong Ai occupied Muong Lo in Nghia Lo and Muong Thanh in Dien Bien. They eventually gained control of the whole area between Muong Lo (Yen Bai) and Muong Thanh (Dien Bien).
In early 2004, Dien Bien was created from Lai Chau Province. Dien Bien includes all the land to the south of the Da River (Black River), and New Lai Chau Province includes all the land to the north of the Da River.
Getting to Dien Bien
The best way to get to Dien Bien from Hanoi is to take a flight from Hanoi to Dien Bien Phu city. It takes one hour by plane. Then either rent a car or catch a taxi to get to other Dien Bien’s district. There are also direct buses from Hanoi to Dien Bien.
Traveling by road from Hanoi to Dien Bien is a great way to discover the north west Vietnam. Take the national road #6 Hanoi, Son La to Dien Bien. You can also reach this area by following the other national road #32 or the new highway from Hanoi to Lai Chau, then to Dien Bien. The stretch of road goes uphill and downhill alternately with many sharp bends.

Dien Bien climate is monsoon tropical in altitude with low temperature and few rain in winter, hot and heavy rain in summer, Vietnam weather. Average annual temperature is 21-230C, lowest temperatures occur from December to February of the following year (14-180C), from April to September average temperature is 250C. Dry season lasts from October to April of the following year.
