The district contains 1 township and 13 communes including Tuan Giao, Chieng Sinh, Muong Mun, Muong Thin, Na Say, Phinh Sang, Pu Nhung, Quai Cang, Quai Nua, Quai To, Ta Ma, Tenh Phong, Toa Tinh, and Mun Chung.

Tuan Giao earthquake 1983-M=6.7 happened in 14 h of the 24th June, 1983, 11 km northeast of the Tuan Giáo Townlet, causing heavy losses to the Tuan Giao district and surrounding areas. After the event, series of aftershocks occurred. The strongest aftershock occurred in 15th July 1983 in the same place of maximum magnitude M = 5.4.

Getting to Tuan Giao Dien Bien

The best way to get to Tuan Giao from Hanoi is to take a flight from Hanoi to Dien Bien Phu city, Dien Bien province or to Na San, Son La province. It takes one hour by plane. Upon your arrival at Dien Bien Phu airport (or Na San airport), you can either rent a car or catch a taxi to get to Tuan Giao district. There are also direct buses from Hanoi to Tuan Giao, with few departures.

It is highly recommended to book a guided tour to Tuan Giao since this is a remote place where local people don’t speak any foreign language. Besides visa, permit is required by local authorities. A tour guide will be very helpful for any trip to Tuan Giao. Taking a tour with a local guide means you learn about the importance of local culture and traditions.

The district climate is monsoon tropical in altitude with low temperature and few rain in winter, hot and heavy rain in summer, Vietnam weather. Average annual temperature is 21-230C, lowest temperatures occur from December to February of the following year (14-180C), from April to September average temperature is 250C. Dry season lasts from October to April of the following year.
