The main interest of the Bac Ha market is the presence of ethnic minority known as the “Flower Hmong”, more commonly called “the ethnic people”. Their dress is extremely rich in colors and patterns.
Can Cau market
Can Cau open-air market opens every Saturday from 6 am to midday. It is set 20 km from Bac Ha, surrounded by fields of rice and corn. Visitors come here to contemplate a lively market of colorful minorities’ costume, textile products, fresh farm produce and taste the original specialties.
Different groups of Hmong villages at high altitude down to the market to sell their produce and buy fabrics and agricultural utensils and kitchen. This is because they wear colorful costumes and embroidered as the Hmong in the region have been dubbed the “Flower Hmong” by the Chinese, French and Vietnamese. The Hmong use the horse as the main transport because it is the only effective way in these regions to carry heavy loads.
Muong Khuong market
Muong Khuong is a distric of Lao Cai province, located 50 km from Lao Cai and 87 km from Sapa. Muong Khuong market is one of the largest and most important market of the local ethnic groups.
The minorities gather here to sell, buy and trade goods such as: vegetable, cattle, brocade, farm tools, traditional incense made from the bark and resin of scented trees…in their traditional cloths. There is a food area where you can taste the most popular specialties. In Muong Khuong, be sure to try the local rice variety called “San Kou”, its light nutty slightly sweet surely charm you.
