Da Nang Vietnam Map
Located in central Vietnam, Da Nang was the landing point of both the French and the Americans during their stints in Vietnam. During the Vietnam War, Da Nang was the home to one fifth of all US servicemen based in Vietnam. This made Da Nang on of the heaviest defended cities in South Vietnam, yet it eventually fell to the North Vietnamese in 1975 with hardly a bullet fired.
Da Nang marks the halfway point between Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City and was the first place to organize its own local communist party committee. It is a busy, dusty, somewhat colorless city. The fourth largest in Vietnam, and one of the largest business centers. Unless you are in Da Nang for business, chances are you will pass straight through.
Nevertheless, Da Nang does have a fascinating Cham Museum that contains an excellent collection of Cham art. However, the main reason for staying in Da Nang is in the surrounding region. Vietnam Beach, the Marble Mountains, Hoi An and My Son are all within striking distance of the city, though it is more pleasant to stay in Hoi An and visit these sights.
Da Nang Vietnam Tourist Attractions
Cham museum
The Cham Museum was founded by The French School of Far East (EFEO) in Danang to collect the sculptures which was discovered at archaeological sites in the area: My Son, Tra Kieu, Binh Dinh and Khuong My.
Built in 1915, the museum boasts the worldwide richest collection of Champa sculptures dating from the 7th throughout the 15th centuries. It should also make a great hideaway from the midday heat in the city, as it is open over the afternoon.
Cham museum displays 297 works (stone statues) attributed to Chams. The Cham is an ethnic group from India who settled in the highlands of Central Vietnam from the second century AD. Therefore, visitors might find pieces inspired by Hinduism. The presented objects are mainly from the seventh and fifteenth centuries.
Non Nuoc Beach
Da Nang is well known for nice beaches with soft-white sand and clear azure water. You may enjoy your beach holiday there nearly any time of year but May to August is the best time for swimming due to mild waves. In addition, there are a number of fantastic water sports and activities such as diving, yachting and fishing (at nearby Son Tra peninsula). Some of the most famous destinations for sun seekers are My Khe, Nam O, Bac My An and Non Nuoc beach (widely known as China Beach).
The main attraction of Danang is the picturesque setting of Non Nuoc Beach. Nestled at the foot of Ngu Hanh Son (Marble Mountains), the beach gently slopes towards the clear azure water of Southeast Asia Sea with tender onshore breeze. That, coupled with almost constant sunshine, makes Non Nuoc Beach an oasis for pleasure seekers. It also offers ideal surfing conditions, especially in late winter (October and November) with waves up to 18 feet high. Actually, in 1993, Vietnam held an international surfing tournament here, attracting 100 professional surfers from 20 countries.
Marble Mountain
The legendary Marble Mountains is located in Ngu Hanh Son district, 8km south of Danang city centre. There are five peaks symbolized by five elements composing the universe in oriental belief: Metal, Wood, Water, Fire and Earth.
Marble Mountains feature a harmonious blend of natural and cultural beauty. Climbing on one of the peaks (Thuy Son), you will visit several mysterious grottoes and pagodas, each echoing an interesting legend. Reaching its summit, breathtaking views open immensely before your eyes from the poetic Truong Giang River stretching out to the Southeast Asia Sea.
