The districts contains 1 township and 16 communes including Minh Dai, Tan Phu, My Thuan, Thu Ngac, Thach Kiet, Thu Cuc, Lai Dong, Dong Son, Tan Son, Kiet Son, Xuan Dai, Kim Thuong, Xuan Son, Van Luong, Long Coc, Tam Thanh, and Vinh Tien.
Xuan Son National Park is the the most travel attraction of Tan Son. The park is located at the extreme south-eastern extent of the Hoang Lien Mountains, in the watershed of the Red River. Elevations at Xuan Son are lower than elsewhere in the Hoang Lien mountains: the nearest point above 2,000 m is 40 km to the north-west. Limestone karst covers 1,661 ha, equivalent to 30% of the area of the national park. The limestone karst contains a large number of caves, some of which contain river systems.
Ethnic Vietnamese (Kinh), Mường, Dao and Sán Chay are the dominant ethnic groups which live in the area. The Dao build their houses in the traditional style, built either on stilts, level with the ground or half on stilts and the other half beaten with earth. Du village, located within the Xuan Son National Park, contains an overwhelming majority of this ethnic group is a tourist attraction.
Getting to Tan Son Phu Tho
The best way to get to Tan Son from Hanoi is to rent a car with driver. You will be picked up at your place in Hanoi and brought to any place in Tan Son. Those who are on budget can take a public bus. Hanoi Viet Tri bus journey takes about 4-5 hours on road. Then either take another local bus or motor-taxi to get to Tan Son from Viet Tri city. There are also local buses from neighboring provinces to Phu Tho (Ha Giang, Lao Cai, Yen Bai, Tuyen Quang…)
Booking a Tan Son guided tour (with a tour guide) is highly recommended, especially when you travel to an off the beaten path destination like Tan Son Vietnam.

Tan Son is located in the subtropical monsoon region. The district has recorded average temperature of 23.5 °C (74.3 °F); the highest temperature and the lowest temperatures recorded have been 29 °C (84 °F) (July) and 15 °C (59 °F) (February), respectively.
The average rainfall varies between 1,600 millimetres (63 in) and 1,800 millimetres (71 in). Humidity is high during the monsoon season from May to October with the annual average figure of 85%; in the dry season it goes below 80%. Precipitation is in the form of rainfall, most of it falling during the monsoon period. Most of the rain usually falls between April and September.
