Cao Bang city is the capital of Cao Bang Province, north east Vietnam. The township is located on the bank of the Bang Giang river, and is around 30 km away from the border with China. Cao Bang city is divided into 8 wards and 3 communes including Hop Giang, Tan Giang, Song Bang, Song Hien, Hoa Chung, Ngoc Xuan, Duyet Chung, De Tham, Hung Dao, Vinh Quang, and Chu Trinh.
History
The area, Cao Bang (“high plateau”) was the stronghold of the last years of the Mạc dynasty after their 1592 defeat at the hands of the Trịnh lords. During the 19th century the area was resistant to the Nguyen government. The city is also known for the Battle of Cao Bang, the first major decisive victory of the Viet Minh against the French Army.
Getting there
The best way to get Cao Bang from Hanoi is to rent a car with driver. You will be picked up at your place in Hanoi and brought to Cao Bang. Those who are on budget can take a local bus. A bus from Lang Son on the China-Vietnam border take 4-5 hours. There are also buses from the neighboring provinces in northern Vietnam. There are different buses from Hanoi to Cao Bang including both night buses and day buses. Hanoi Cao Bang bus journey takes about 6-8 hours on road.
Taking a guided tour (with a tour guide) is highly recommended, especially when you travel to an off the beaten path destination like Cao Bang.
